The Sukunda Lamp is a traditional bronze oil lamp, intricately handcrafted and rooted in the rich heritage of the Newar community of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. This exquisite ceremonial lamp, often used in rituals surrounding births, marriages, and other sacred occasions, features the revered figure of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity of wisdom, success, and the remover of obstacles.
Beautifully designed, the lamp includes a reservoir for storing oil, which is poured into a shallow dish at the front to fuel the burning wick. The handle is elegantly sculpted with a detailed leaf frond, which ascends to meet a striking five-headed cobra. The front is adorned with a finely embossed image of Lord Ganesha.
The unique design of the Sukunda is deeply symbolic, “Su” translates to beautiful and “kunda” to lake representing the mythology of the Kathmandu Valley, which was once believed to be a vast lake inhabited by snake gods. The lamp’s handle forms an eleven-headed cobra, a representation of the serpent king Nagaraja, with child Krishna depicted on its back. Below them sits Vishnu, the god of creation, atop Garuda. The oil inside the lamp symbolizes the lake, while the figures represent the divine transformation of the valley for human habitation. Topped with a multi-armed Ganesha, this lamp is a spiritual vessel cherished by both Hindus and Buddhists, making it an exceptional cultural artifact.
Please note that vintage pieces come with small imperfections, that's a part of its beauty and age.
