Title: Panch Kanya

Size: 15”X11”

This oleograph, published by the Raja Ravi Varma Press, depicts The Panchakanya – Ahalya, Draupadi, Sita, Tara, and Mandodari, revered female figures in the epics of India.  Ahalya, Sita, Tara, and Mandodari belong to the Ramayana, while Draupadi is from the Mahabharata. Celebrated for their beauty and virtue, they symbolize significance in Hinduism, where the number five holds sway. In worship, five ingredients correspond to the five human senses: taste, smell, sight, touch, and hearing. The belief extends to nature manifesting in five forms: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Sky. Each kanya is born of one of these elements, weaving their characters with nature's essential elements.

This chromolithograph was crafted at the Karla-Lonavla Press.
